New to seed phrases?
A seed phrase is the most important thing in your crypto life. Here is what it is, why it matters, and how to keep it safe — in plain language.
What is a seed phrase?
A seed phrase — also called a recovery phrase or mnemonic — is a list of 12 words generated when you create a new wallet. It looks something like this:
These 12 words are not just a password. They mathematically encode the private key to your wallet. Anyone who has these words can access your funds — from any device, anywhere in the world, forever.
Why it is not like a password
A password can be reset. A seed phrase cannot. There is no “forgot my seed phrase” button. There is no support team that can recover it for you. There is no company holding a backup copy.
If you lose your seed phrase and lose access to your device, your funds are gone permanently.
The golden rule
Whoever holds the seed phrase controls the wallet. Keep it secret, keep it safe, and never share it with anyone — including people claiming to be wallet support.
How to back it up safely
The only safe backup is a physical one. Write your seed phrase on paper — or stamp it into metal for fire and water resistance — and store it somewhere secure.
Test your backup — before you need it
Writing down a seed phrase is not enough. You need to verify that what you wrote is correct and that you can actually read it months later. Heldby prompts you to do a 3-word spot check every 30 days for exactly this reason.
The test works like this: Heldby asks you to confirm words 4, 8, and 11 of your phrase (for example). If you get them right, you know your backup is accurate. If you cannot, you need to re-check your written copy before there is ever a real emergency.
What happens if you lose it?
If you lose your seed phrase and your device is lost, stolen, or broken, your wallet is unrecoverable. The funds remain on the blockchain forever — but no one can ever move them.
This is not a scare tactic. It is the reality of self-custody: you are the bank. The responsibility that comes with that is real, but so is the security. No company can freeze your funds, no server can be hacked to drain your wallet.
If you still have your device
You can view your seed phrase in Heldby under Settings → Backup. Use this window to write it down correctly and verify your backup.
Common scams to know about
Seed phrase theft is the most common way people lose their crypto. The attacks are almost always the same:
Fake support
Someone messages you on Discord, Telegram, or Twitter claiming to be wallet support and asks for your seed phrase to "verify" or "restore" your wallet. Legitimate wallet apps never ask for this.
Fake wallet apps
A website or app that looks identical to Heldby or another wallet asks you to "import" your wallet by entering your seed phrase. Always download extensions only from the official Chrome Web Store listing.
Clipboard malware
Malware on your device reads clipboard contents. Never copy-paste your seed phrase anywhere.
